Best Feature: bitter and spicy

Traditional Oktoberfest beers are darker in colour, have more malty characteristics, and higher in alcohol content. Granville Island Oktoberfest beer is a good example of this style made for the world's largest beer festival. Available in 650 ml bottles, Oktoberfest is 6% in alcohol. The pour created decent head retention and the dark malts are very apparent and created a dark amber coloured beer. The mixture of dark malts and the unique blend of hops create a bitter beer that is both hoppy and has definite "spicy" characteristics in the aroma and the flavour. Beers like Oktoberfest from Granville Island Brewing would scar off light lager drinkers, but also appease beer drinkers who prefer darker ales and more intense flavours. Try this one with roasted chicken, beef or lamb.

Beer Fact: Oktoberfest is the world's largest festival and traditionally begins the third week in September and ends the first weekend in October. This year's Oktoberfest was 18 days (instead of the usual 16) because October 1st fell on a Sunday this year.

Best Feature: light hoppy aroma

Granville Island Brewing has brewed the Oktoberfest Lager, a limited edition seasonal lager, to mark the annual Oktoberfest beer festival in Germany. This lager was a coppery colour topped with a thin white head which did not last long at all.  The nose was predominantly sweet caramel malt with hints of a mild woodiness.  On the tongue, the mouthfeel was milky with high carbonation chased with a hint of maple in the finish.  Overall, I liked this beer and recommend it with a nice prime rib.

Beer fact: Granville Island Brewery offers tours to the general public at 12, 2 and 4 pm daily.

Best Feature: amber-copper colour

Oktoberfest is a 6% amber-copper coloured lager. After It was poured, the head seemed to diminish quickly. This beer's aroma had a hint of fruitiness and hoppiness. The body was medium, with a medium carbonation level. The mouthfeel was slightly malty and caramel through the hop finish without a lingering aftertaste. Oktoberfest Lager is available for a limited time (each year: late Sept - early Nov) at select government liquor stores for $4.90 per 650ml bottle. It's also available on tap at the Granville Island tap room. You could try pairing this beer with traditional German fare like sauerkraut, a strudel or schnitzel.

Beer Fact: Granville Island Brewing produces most of the special limited release bottles like Oktoberfest at the original Granville Island location.
