Best Features: light, crisp
Pilsner Urquell, the world's first pilsner, is available at most liquor stores throughout British Columbia. The pour produced a lot of light bubbles and a very apparent hoppy aroma. Although this beer is a pilsner, it is not overly carbonated (like some pilsners) and has a light mouthfeel. At 4.4% alcohol, this beer is lighter but definitely full of hops and character. The finish is crisp, bitter and clean with absolutely no sweetness. This is a great full-flavoured "lighter" beer. Pilsner Urquell has the ability to pair with light and medium flavoured foods (potato chips, fries & stew).
Beer Fact: The "pilsner" style of beer is know for a bitter and hoppy flavour with the absents of sweetness. Pilsners are fermented for long periods of time at cold temperatures producing crisp and clean beers. |

Best Features: clean finish
Pilsner Urquell is the original pilsner style beer brewed in the Czech Republic. We tasted this beer from a clear green bottle. In the glass, it was a clear dark apple juice colour topped with a tight white head which thinned out rather quickly. The aroma was a mildly sweet hoppiness. I found the mouthfeel to be light, crisp, and clean, chased by a lingering hoppy finish. I like this beer quite a bit and believe it would be fairly versatile to pair with a variety of food. At $11.75 for a six-pack, Pilsner Urquell is a premium product at a premium price.
Beer Fact: The town of Plzen produced the original Pilsner in 1842. The name was changed to Pilsner Urquell in 1898 to protect the original beer. The name "Pilsner Urquell" is a German phrase meaning "from the original source, Plzen".
