Best Features: unique, ale flavours, lager mouthfeel
Vancouver Island Brewing produces some excellent products, including Hermann's Dark Lager. This beer is perfect for people who prefer more flavourful beers, but like a lighter mouthfeel. The pour produces a rich dark brown beer with a thin head and loose bubbles. The aroma immediately reminds me of an ale with roasted and sweet malt characteristics. The initial taste is sweet caramel malts followed by a roasted and nutty finish. Hermann's Dark Lager is very smooth, easy to drink, and has a clean finish. This beer goes really well with a wide range of chocolates! This was one of the featured products at the 2006 West Coast Chocolate Festival. Try some over the Winter Holidays for a beer and food pairing that is second to none!
Beer Fact: Dark lagers use roasted malted barley to create the darker colour and roasted flavour. Lagers are fermented at a colder temperature for a longer period of time to create a lighter mouthfeel and higher levels of carbonation. |

Best Features: delightfully sweet, excellent pairing possibilities
Hermann's Dark Lager from Vancouver Island Brewing is one of my favourite dark lagers, and is available in local government liquor stores and many private beer stores. We sampled this lager from a standard 341 ml long neck brown bottle. When poured the colouration was a beautiful rich brown with hints of ruby red topped off with a short lived off- white head. The nose was a dark rich malt with hints of burnt-roasted characteristics. I found the carbonation to be about average with a medium buttery mouthfeel. This lager is full flavoured, a bit nutty, with a delightful sweetness. A very versatile beer that paired very well with a variety of chocolates and meals.
Beer Fact: Vancouver Island Brewing opened in 1984 and all of the beers they produce adhere to the Bavarian Purity Laws of 1516.
