Best Features: gluten-free, unique
La Messagère is North America's first widely available gluten-free beer! This beer combines rice and buckwheat to create a light ale with an almost honey-like mouthfeel. The pour produced a light wispy head. The aroma is very floral and sweet produced by a combination of the grains and hops. La Messagere is subtly sweet on the tongue with a higher carbonation level similar to champagne or cider. The finish lingers and coats the tongue. Overall, this gluten-free beer still maintains a lot of the qualities associated with other beer made with malted barley or other grains. Try La Messagère with lighter foods; white fish, chips or salad with a light honey-vinaigrette dressing.
Beer Fact: Beer can be made with several different types of grains. The most common are barley (the most common), wheat, rice and corn. Some beers use these grains or sugar produced by these grains in various combinations to create different styles of beer. |

Best Features: fruity aroma
La Messagère is a gluten free product brewed by Les bières de la Nouvelle-France in Saint-Alexis-des-Monts, Québec. We sampled this ale from a standard 341 ml long neck brown bottle. When poured, this pale ale was a clear apple juice colour topped with a thin white head which receded quickly. The nose was very fruity almost like a cider. I found the mouthfeel to be very light with high levels of carbonation. The taste was very sharp and rather dry with a lingering mild aftertaste. This is the only gluten free beer that I have tried so it makes it hard to compare it to another beer in this category. I was a little turned off of the champagne like flavour and the lingering aftertaste. The price point for this beer is also very steep (19.50 for a six pack!).
Beer Fact: La Messagère is available at some BC Liquor Stores, but like all products, it can be special order to any liquor store in the province.

Best Feature: sweet on the tongue
This week's beer is La Messagère from Quebec. It's a gluten-free beer that will appeal to a unique and distinct market. It has an interesting label with nutritional values and best before date prominent on the neck of the bottle. The beer itself is a clear golden color. It is sweet to the tongue but with a very dry aftertaste which may not help quench your thirst on a hot summer day. Try pairing La Messagère with a Chinese meal preferably with a sweet sauce. This is not normally the type of beer I would drink but I probably could get to enjoy it over time. For those who enjoy beer and have concerns about gluten-free products it is unique and worth trying.
Beer Fact: Coeliac disease (also known as gluten-sensitive enteropathy or coeliac sprue) is a condition of the small intestine. Gluten, a substance found in wheat, barley and rye, reacts with the small bowel, causing damage by activating the immune system to attack the delicate lining of the bowel, which is responsible for absorbing nutrients and vitamins.
