Best Feature: deep amber colour
Innis & Gunn Oak aged Beer Scottish Ale comes in a clear long bottle had a delicate look for a strong tasting beer. This ale had a distinct aroma of hard liquor, which brought me to believe I was about to drink something with a memorable taste. The deep amber colour and clarity had a strong message "I bet you can't wait to try me." I have no regrets for tasting this one after being thrown off with the strong aroma. I did not detect a lot of carbonation but there was a sweet sense on the tongue. There was a long aftertaste and I felt that it was a tough finish. I would recommend pairing this ale with food, Christmas pudding (cake) and hard sauce (brandy). Perfect for sitting around the fire on a winter evening. 2.5 out of 5, but my ale drinking friends would definitely rank this one higher on their list. |

Best Features: unique aroma and flavour
Innis and Gunn is a unique beer with a very unique aroma and flavour. The beer is aged in oak barrels that were used to age bourbon. pour produces a very vibrant dark honey/amber colour that is evident in the clear bottle. The aroma has a bourbon and spicy notes including vanilla and oranges mingled with a subtle malt sweetness. Innis & Gunn has a lower carbonation level and a sweet dry finish that has a subtle warming sensation on the tongue (due to the high alcohol content). This is not the type of beer I would usually drink but I enjoyed the uniqueness and it did remind me of a specialty cask-conditioned style beer. I am not a fan of the smell or taste of bourbon, but it was definitely unique. Try this beer with strong flavoured food; curry, roasted pork or shark.
Beer Fact: Innis & Gunn is one of the newest beers on the market only being released in 2003! |

Best Feature: sweet aroma
Innis & Gunn Oak Aged Beer is sold in government liquor stores and comes in a 330 ml clear glass bottle. In the glass, this strong English ale has a colour similar to iced tea topped with a thin head. The nose was sweet and reminded me a stale alcohol. I found the mouthfeel to be rather light with low carbonation. The flavour was sweet almost like a liqueur chased by a dry short aftertaste. I found this beer a little too sweet for my liking but would probably sip one after dinner sitting by a fire. It is listed at $3.25 for one 330 ml bottle, so Innis & Gunn would cost around $19.50 for a six pack!
Beer Fact: Innis & Gunn was discovered by accident, formerly the beer was used to make an ale-finished whiskey and then discarded!

Best Feature: great with a cigar after dinner!
Innis & Gunn is a strong (6.6% alcohol) beer from Scotland, which is aged in an oak barrel for 30 days. It is rustic in colour with a relatively clear look to it. Innis & Gunn has a strong taste that reminds me more of a whiskey than a beer. It also has a dry aftertaste, which is another characteristic I associate with whiskeys. As I personally do not enjoy hard alcohol that much, this beer is not one of my favorites, but if you enjoy the occasional whiskey or scotch it may be a great alternative for you. I could definitely see you drinking this after a steak dinner with a cigar in hand.
Beer Fact: Beer conditioned in wooden barrels often assumes some of the woody or spicy characteristics of the wood and these are in the finished product.
