Best Features: lingering bitterness, great with "spicy" foods
Granville Island Brewing India Pale Ale is a limited release beer only available for a short time in liquor stores throughout the Lower Mainland. Available only in 650 ml bottles, this beer packs a lot of flavour in this big bottle. The pour produced a light head and released a pleasant hoppy and citrus aroma. The carbonation level is medium-high which indicates a lighter body and mouthfeel. This beer is definitely unique; although the mouthfeel is light and crisp (like a lager) the lingering bitterness definitely is more like a strong IPA. The initial sharp bitterness and dry grapefruit-like flavours disappear quickly but return in the aftertaste with a lingering more subtle hoppy and citrus flavour that are almost "spicy" on the tongue. This is the perfect beer for a hot summer day. Try this beer with blue cheese, game and mild to hot curry. Spicy Indian food is also a good pairing for this type of beer as the British discovered when enjoying Indian cooking over 300 years ago.
Beer Fact: India Pale Ales were first brewed to endure the long trip from Great Britain to India during the times of British Imperialism to supply the troops with their beer. The additional alcohol content and over-hopping of this type of beer acted as natural preservatives to help the beer survive the long voyage. |

Best Feature: distinct tartness, and alluring nose
Granville Island Brewing's India Pale Ale comes to us in a 650 ml tall brown bottle. When I poured this beer for the first time I noticed the beautiful reddish yellow colour. My glass was topped with a light wispy head that did not linger but receded rather quickly to a thin ring on the sides of my glass. I found the carbonation level to be on the medium side, with very faint nose but I could make out a light hoppiness with hints of fruit. The mouthfeel was light with a strong sharp bite of grapefruit bitterness which became muted then returned with a nice mild tartness which lingered at the back of my tongue. A very nice India Pale Ale which would definitely be a good match for something spicy like a nice red Thai curry or a homemade chunky salsa with a jalapeno or two (half a jalapeno for you less adventurous types).
