Best Features: light mouthfeel, dark beer flavours
Efes Dark combines several grains (including rice) to make a "lighter" flavoured dark beer. The pour created a dark rich beer with a loose and wispy head. The aroma was a mixture of dark roasted malts and hints of molasses and caramel. The colour is very dark in the glass but also clear and clean when held up to light. The first sip produces a rich chocolate malt taste with a short finish. Efes Dark is the type of beer that you can taste in stages; the beginning is subtly sweet, followed by a bitter sweet chocolate middle and roasted finish. The light mouthfeel makes this beer easy to drink and different from other heavier bodied dark beers.
Efes Dark is fermented in the lager style; at cold temperatures at the bottom of the fermentation tank. This brewing style makes this beer litter in body, easy to drink and very unique. Try Efes Dark with chocolate over the summer or with robust flavours to match the roasted malts in the beer. Salty flavours bring out the sweet chocolate flavours in this beer.
Beer Fact: Efes Dark is a "spec" product and not distributed widely. "Spec" (or speculative) products are available a some private and government liquor stores throughout the Lower Mainland. |

Best Feature: rich roasted aroma
Efes Dark is a Turkish beer brewed in a European style dark lager manner with 6.5% alcohol content. We sampled it from a 341 ml long neck brown bottle labeled with the Efes blue logo on a dark background. When we poured this beer the colouration was almost a dark coffee topped with a nice tan head which receded rather quickly. The nose was a rich roasted malts with an undertone of grains. The mouthfeel was medium with a distinct roasted coffee flavour with a sweet finish, topped with a minimal aftertaste. I liked this for a darker beer and found it very easy to drink. Definitely a good BBQ beer for garlic seasonings and hickory or smoked sauces.
Beer Fact: Try Efes Dark and other premium and specialty imports at the 2008 Canada Cup of Beer!
