Best Feature: great name, thick tanned head
We had a great opportunity last weekend to taste a lot of Mission Spring Brewing Company beer, including a private brewery tour with the brewmaster, Tim Brown. A featured vender at the 2008 Eat Fraser Valley, Mission Spring Brewing Company proudly poured Fat Guy Oatmeal Stout to patrons. We used this beer several times for our beer seminars including pairing it with cheese and chocolate. The Fat Guy Oatmeal Stout (did I mention what a great name that is for a beer) is thick, dark and complex. The pour produced a black beer with a very rich and dense tanned head. The aroma is a combination of dark chocolate, espresso and semi-sweet oats. On the tongue the beer is silky, low in carbonation and full of body. The bitter sweet beginning is followed by a long aftertaste that produces roasted malt, dark chocolate and bitter malt finish. The lower carbonation level causes the beer to remain on the tongue for an extended period of time often giving the impression that the beer has a very heavy body - this beer has a medium body but full-body flavours! Try Mission Spring's Fat Guy Oatmeal Stout with smoked gouda or aged cheddar, dark or semi-sweet chocolate and a hearty stew.
Beer Fact: Mission Springs Brewing Company is a small brewery with a large seating capacity (over 800 seats in the pub and restaurant combined). We were somewhat overwhelmed by the size of the building that has a huge kitchen, a lot of country charm, and 2 outdoor beach volleyball courts! Definitely worth a trip out to the Fraser Valley. |

Best Feature: unique, powerful and dark
Fat Guy Oatmeal Stout has a cleaver name and is truly a unique microbrewed beer produced by Mission Springs Brewing Company. The dark colour has an inviting dark tanned head. The nose is very apparent with some chocolate malt sweetness but strong dark chocolate and roasted were very prevalent. The mouthfeel is fairly light for an oatmeal stout (some oatmeal stouts can be very heavy on the tongue) but the bitterness lingered for a long period of time. The lower carbonation level makes this beer very palatable. Try Fat Guy Oatmeal Stout with hickory BBQ sauce, salty oysters or strong dry cheeses (like asiago).
Beer Fact: We have been conditioned to think that beer should be consumed out of small bottles and cans. Several microbrewed beers and specialty import beers come in various serving sizes and perfect for sharing with friends or during your next meal! Try bringing a big bottle of beer (or two) to a friend's house instead of a bottle of wine.
