Best Features: great logo, sweet, creamy & smooth

Dead Frog Brewery has made a lot of ripples in the industry over the past couple of years. In addition to re-branding the former brewery (know as Backwoods Brewing), Dead Frog Brewery also has a very unique name, several creative slogans and is available in a clear bottle. The success of the brewery has been seen in sales, employees and the opening of a new location to hold the bottling line. In addition, Dead Frog Brewery has also received a lot of accolades from beer drinkers winning several awards at The Canada Cup of Beer, including favourite microbrew in 2006 and 2007.

Dead Frog Nut Brown Ale is an excellent product that combines sweet malts with a combination of dark roasted flavours. This blend creates a sweet beer with hints of chocolate, coffee and roasted nuts. In the glass, the beer is very appealing; a rich and creamy tanned head with an inviting dark honey brown body. The carbonation level is medium meaning that the beer stays on the palate for a good length of time. The first sip creates a sweet beginning followed by a creamy middle. The finish of chocolate and hints of roasted coffee beckons a second and third sip. Dead Frog Nut Brown Ale does a good job of not overpowering the tongue with heavy flavours making this beer very consumable. The medium amount of carbonation also reduces the "burp factor". Some people may mistake this style of beer as being a little "flat" but instead it should be considered more smooth, creamy and rich.

To compliment Dead Frog Nut Brown Ale try it with spicy foods; Thai, chili, peppercorn and Cajun sauces - the sweet malts with help cool your tongue. This beer will also work with a variety of cheeses; Manchego, lightly smoked Gouda even mozzarella. In addition, Dead Frog Nut Brown Ale will work well with hearty stews, roasted chicken and sausage.

Beer Fact: Dead Frog beer was first available in bottles in June 2008 in private liquor stores. Slowly but surely the success of the company has caused a demand at government liquor stores throughout the Lower Mainland.

Best Features: inviting aroma, smooth aftertaste

Nut Brown Ales have a range of flavours but Dead Frog Brewery produces a nut brown ale that is robust and second to none. In the glass this beer has an inviting dark copper colour and with a hint of malty and chocolate sweetness.  The head was fairly tight and compact and it lingered nicely. The mouthfeel of Dead Frog Nut Brown Ale was more on the medium side with an average carbonation making this beer smooth and very easy to drink.  The surprise is in the flavour stages of the beer; a definite sweet beginning with nice roasted and malt sweetness in the finish.  The aftertaste was short and disappeared rather quietly leaving me wanting another sip.  This is a very smooth beer that I could drink all night. Contact the brewery directly to order a keg and try it with your next summer BBQ!

Pair Dead Frog Nut Brown Ale with light cream sauce, salty seafood and blackened fish.

Beer Fact: Hops will add flavour and aroma. Hops added during the early stages of the boil will add flavour (and bitterness) hops added near the end of the boil will add aroma (and citrus notes).

*Unless otherwise stated, this is the BC Government Liquor Store price quoted.

*Our rating scale is based on a five point system (1 being least enjoyable, 5 being excellent) We rate the beer using the following criteria; overall taste, appearance, mouthfeel, freshness, body, aroma, finish, availability, and price.
