Best Features: excellent mouthfeel!
This is Black Oak Brewing's "flagship" beer, and is one of the most interesting pale ales I have ever tasted (I mean this in a good way!). At first, I looked at the colour & was deceived. I thought it could have been a lager or pilsner, but my taste buds told the truth. It had a malty taste with a hint of wood. The Black Oak Pale Ale finished with a subtle hop flavour. Currently, none of the Black Oak flavours are available here in BC. I was fortunate enough to be in Oakville Ont (suburb of Toronto) last month & brought some back home. Black Oak Pale Ale is distinguished, almost in its own sub-category for a pale ale.

Best Features: purified water, full flavour
Based in Ontario, Black Oak beers are brewed with reverse osmosis water which has had the majority of the minerals removed. This allows the beer to take on the flavours of the ingredients to a higher degree resulting a in a beer that is natural tasting. When poured, this pale ale had a relatively light head, average carbonation, and was a clear golden yellow. The fragrance to this beer was a subtle sweet maltiness. On the tongue, this pale ale was light in body and possessed a distinct malt flavour. The subtle after taste persisted for some time after swallowing. Like most beer, travel is an issue (especially in Zayvin's suitcase), I look forward to touring Black Oak Brewery and tasting this beer fresh from the source!

Best Features: subtle bitterness, versatile
Zayvin had the important task of going for holidays in Trinidad for Carnival. On his stop over in Toronto he got a chance to tour Black Oak Brewing. The good folks provided him with a tour and some great samples. The Black Oak Pale Ale, has a deceptive lager-like colour. Most Pale Ales, are, for lack of a better term, "Pale". This beer was lighter in colour and had a full head when poured into a glass. The aroma was alluring with a light hoppy/malty smell. I am always suspect of beers from Ontario because of the hard water, this beer, however, was very light and easy to drink. The bitterness associated with Pale Ales was not present in this beer and it would make a great addition to a meal. Try this beer with some roasted chicken or nachos. I will definitely look for this beer the next time I travel to Ontario! |
