Best Features: perfect harmony of flavours, banana!
WOW! Now this beer from Yaletown Brewing Co. is tasty. I highly recommend you go out & sample Hill's Special Wheat (hefeweizen). They usually give you a lemon in these styles of beers.....you really don't need to squeeze it in your pint. Hefeweizen is a top fermented, unfiltered, wheat beer (or white beer) with noticeable yeast sediment and a cloudy appearance. Hill's Special Wheat had a cloudy yellow-gold colour, this unfiltered thirst quencher has a hint of cloves to it plus banana is added to the mix to mingle in perfect harmony. You may think banana in my beer? Trust me on this one, it's subtle & extremely complimentary to the flavour. However, I found the most prominent banana presence is when you let a little burp go! This beer has made my top 20 favorite of all time list.

Best Features: sweet fragrance, light & subtle
Hill's Special Wheat from Yaletown Brewing Company is a very flavourful beer that caught me off guard. The fragrance on this beer was sweet with an undertone of cloves. Most hefeweizen beer, like this one, are served garnished with a lemon and these beers usually have an opaque and cloudy yellow appearance. The mouthfeel of Hill's Special Wheat was very light with average carbonation. You can definitely taste the distinct clove flavouring chased by a subtle banana in the aftertaste. This is definitely a beer I would recommend if you are in the mood for something very unique, light, and flavourful. It would probably be a good beer on its own and not with a meal as the flavouring from both would be lost on each other. If this beer was available in the liquor store I would most definitely be giving it a higher rating.

Best Features: subtle, not too complex
Rick, Zayvin and I were dropping off some tickets for the Wine & Beer Festival (April 16th @ UBC) and we decided to stop by Yaletown Brewery to meet the brewmaster Iain. Iain suggested that we try the hefeweizen (Hill's Special Wheat) that was fresh on tap. My first thoughts were, here we go again, someone messing with my beer by adding all sorts of fancy ingredients. I must admit that hefeweizen style beers are my least favourite. I do not like the cloudy appearance or the complexity (too many spices and flavours) usually associated with this type of beer. I often turn up my nose at the sight and smell of these types of beer. I hesitated before I took my first sip of Hill's Special Wheat but when I did, I was pleasantly surprised. This beer was smooth, easy to drink and not overly complex. The hint of banana added to the sweetness. The taste was subtle, but distinct. I would not recommend hefeweizen for a night of drinking, but for something different and unique, the hefeweizen from Yaletown Brewery (part of the Mark James Group) will please your palette and maybe change your mind about hefeweizen style beers, it changed mine! |
