Best Feature: sweet lingering aftertaste
This week's beer is Jamaican Lager from Dockside Brewing Company on Granville Island. The special ingredient is hibiscus that is used to add flavour, aroma, and a very attractive pinkish hue. A mixture of floral and sweet aromas are very pleasant to the nose. The body is noticeably light (typical of a lager) with a moderate level of carbonation. The most noticeable hibiscus flavour is in the sweet lingering aftertaste; very pleasant and a little unexpected. This beer is very light and easy to drink with only a hint of sweetness from the hibiscus. Jamaican Lager is one of the most unique lagers available in Vancouver. An interesting feature of most flavoured beers is that they are typically ales with a heavier body. According to the brewmaster, this beer is a favourite among women. Watch for other brewpubs and microbrews who offer flavoured lagers for a light and refreshing twist on this style of beer.
Beer Fact: Beer from all over the world is flavoured with different herbs, spices and sweeteners. Hibiscus is just one example of a floral additive used in beer. |

Best Feature: unique taste
This 4.7% alcohol Jamaican Lager has an appealing rosey-amber colour (slight pinkish hue), a subtly sweet aroma & taste due to the special ingredient "HIBISCUS". This beer features an average carbonation level & minimal aftertastes. Hibiscus has been consumed for many years and is used in desserts & herbal teas to name a couple. Dockside's master brewer Peter Haupenthal told us that it was purely experimental in creating this brew, & it was a food rep who supplied the hibiscus concentrate. This beer would be great prior to a meal, after a meal, & great on a hot summers afternoon. Unfortunately, Jamaican Lager is only available in the Granville Island Hotel @ Dockside Restaurant or Dockside Lounge. The only bottling they do is for the hotel guest rooms. Definitely worth trying next time you're on Granville Island.
Beer Fact: Dockside's Jamaican Lager has the same ingredients as their "Marina Light Lager" with the exception of the hibiscus concentrate added during the brewing process. Originally brewed only as a summer beer, the Jamaican Lager became so popular, dockside produces it year round.

Best Feature: floral fragrance, light mouthfeel
Jamaican Lager is brewed at Dockside Restaurant on beautiful Granville Island. When I first heard of this beer it peaked my interest, the Hibiscus is a tropical flower common in the Caribbean. This beer was a delicious pink amber colour, which was very pleasing to the eye. The head was very light with very tight compact bubbles and disappeared rather quickly. The aroma was a distinct floral fragrance which was not overpowering and does not detract from the beer. On the tongue, the mouthfeel was light, with minimal carbonation. and a hint of sweetness. The finish was pleasant with a very palatable aftertaste which gently lingered.
