Best Feature: no preservatives
Kokanee Light is a naturally aged, 4% glacier light beer with no preservatives. There is less carbonation than average beers with a slight aroma of hops and a golden colour. In the glass, it has similar properties to other light beers; little head retention and very light in colour. Kokanee's brewers say it features a robust blend of 3 malts. Robust? It's a light beer with a simple & smooth finish. Nothing robust in my opinion. Quite average, a little boring, but drinkable.
Beer Fact: Kokanee is now owned by Labatt Canada, who is owned by Interbrew (Inbev)

Best Feature: low-carb
Kokanee's offering in the "Light Beer" category is Kokanee Light. This light beer was a enticing pale yellow with about average carbonation and a head with larger sized bubbles. When I tasted the Kokanee Light I was extremely disappointed, the mouthfeel was very light in body but the flavour was missing. I found this beer to be a watered down version of a traditional beer, the hops were barely noticeable and the aftertaste was almost imperceptible. Generally "Light Beers" tend to be lighter in taste and flavour as well as in alcohol content, but this was a little bit of a disappointment.

Best Feature: light, cheap
We decided that we will have to have a "light" or "low carb" beer night and compare the different products available on the market. Kokanee Light is very similar to other light products. Very subtle tastes, no distinct nose, and it is light and wispy when poured into a glass. The aroma did have a hint of sweetness. The mouthfeel is fairly smooth, with a medium amount of carbonation. The aftertaste leaves you wanting more substance and beer-like qualities. The best description of this beer is watery. I prefer other Kokanee products (Kokanee & Kokanee Gold) but I would drink this again; it is cheap ($9.65 a six pack - the same as regular Kokanee) and it has some regular beer qualities. This beer could work as a good substitute for water when out playing a game of softball or soccer in the hot sun!
Beer Fact: Most beer has 11-17 grams of carbohydrates per bottle (a lot less than coolers or ciders). The carbohydrates are a result of the natural sugars from the malts that ferment into alcohol. |
