Best Feature: the name!

Old Speckled Hen, an English style ale, is from Greene King Brewing in Suffolk, England. The pour is very exquisite and is a real feature of this style of beer. The head retention is excellent and the rich head is thick and creamy. The amber colour is very bright and very inviting. The fruity aroma and initial flavour is combined with a subtle malty taste that creates a lingering bitterness. Try this beer over dinner; a tangy BBQ sauce or peppercorn steak. This beer is difficult to locate in the Lower Mainland!

Beer Fact: Some beers (especially ales) should not be served ice cold, check the individual brewery websites for temperature serving suggestions.

Best Feature: beautiful colour

Brewed in Suffolk England, Old Speckled Hen is a 5.2% ale has a very attractive amber-copper colour with nice head retention. The aroma is fruity, while the taste is slightly malty. Old Speckled Hen starts sweet, then finishes with a slight bitterness......a good balance. Priced fairly in the BC liquor stores at $9.76 for 4 - 500ml tall cans (approx 5 1/3rd of standard 355ml 6-pack).

Beer Fact: Old Speckled Hen was 1st brewed to mark the 50th anniversary of the MG car factory. Old Speckled Hen was named after an unusual speckled vintage MG car.

Best Feature: cascading head

Brewed in England with an alcohol content of 5.2%, Old Speckled Hen was delightful change from a typical North American dark beer.  The most intriguing characteristic of this beer was the wonderful and appealing cascading head; the bubbles were tight and resulted in a rather thick, long lived head.  In the glass, the hue was an inviting amber coppery colour and the carbonation was below average.  The flavour was initially bitter but faded to a gentle sweetness which lingered and the finish was smooth.  I liked this beer and would recommend it with a meal of gamier meat like lamb.
