Best Features: not too heavy, easy drinking for a darker ale
Backwood's Nut Brown Ale was a very pleasant surprise. It has a beautiful rich darker brown colour & a palette tempting, pleasing aroma. I was impressed with the drinkability of this beer. The chocolate malt & roasted taste wasn't as heavy & filling as you would expect from this style of brew (deceiving colour). This is definitely a beer you could enjoy pint after pint without feeling bloated. Students from our "Beer Tasting & Education" classes agreed with me. One even made "beer-ginger bread" & brought it to class. I was amazed how well that paired with this brew. No bottled products for now, but watch for Backwoods at your local Greater Vancouver pub.

Best Features: roasted chocolate flavour
Nut Brown Ale is a rich and smooth beer from Backwoods Brewing in Aldergrove. We chose this beer as the "Beer of the Week" because it will be featured at this week's Hopscotch Festival (Just Here For The Beer is also presenting at the festival). The Nut Brown Ale poured very nicely into a glass with a rich creamy and full head. The aroma was a mixture of roasted chocolate malts and a sweetness similar to molasses. The head lingered for a long time and this gave me a chance to admire the nice dark brown colour. On the tongue, the initial taste is roasted malt followed by a nutty sweet finish. The carbonation level is low-medium which makes this beer very easy to drink. Fans of espresso and roasted chocolate flavours will definitely enjoy this beer. Try matching this beer with your favourite dessert that has some molasses in it (or bitter sweetness), or use it in your next pot roast.
Beer Fact: Backwoods Brewing has one of the best microbrew websites in town. On the site they even have suggestions for food pairings for each of their beers. |

Best Features: distinct malt flavour
Backwoods Brewing Nut Brown Ale is a wonderful dark beer that really caught my attention. Its medium brown colouration was deliciously inviting and complimented its sweet malty aroma. The mouthfeel was in the light to medium range and the carbonation about average. I enjoyed the distinct malt flavour chased by a slightly hoppy finish which gently lingered on my tongue. This is definitely a brew that would go well with many dishes ranging from something rather spicy to a nice grilled sirloin steak. |
