Best Feature: a fine addition to my "poverty pack"!
I am fairly famous for my love of cheap beer with high alcohol content that is easy to drink, I coined the phrase "poverty pack" way back in my student days to describe these types of beer. Olympia is the type of beer that should be added to my list of decent, cheap beers. The beer is light, with fairly good head retention. The high carbonation makes for a light body, and a light golden colour. The beer itself is easy drinking but doesn't have a lot of beer qualities (pleasant hoppy aroma, etc) loved by beer connoisseurs. I have tried American produced Olympia before and didn't like the flavour, so, as advertised "it's [must be] the water". At $7.95 a six pack, Olympia is a good change from ordinary party beers and is easy to drink. Try this beer for your next "shotgun", a weekend away with the boys, or as a marinade or beer bath for you chicken or steak.
Beer Fact: Great Western Brewing has a wide range of products, my favourite is the beer available in 2L bottles! The Saskatchewan liquor board must love this! |

Best Feature: dirt cheap price!
Olympia is a 5% clear, yellow-gold lager. It has an unpleasant aroma, so one would expect the mouthfeel to be similar. Surprisingly, it tasted much better than it smelled. It was crisp and light, but not as harsh compared to others in the "lowest price in the store" category. So in a nutshell, the best time to enjoy an Olympia, is maybe when you have bad allergies or a sinus cold. The smell won't throw you off of the taste. You may also want to offer it to your guests after they've had five better beers. A very simple and very cheap lager, but drinkable.
Beer fact: Olympia purchased in Canada is brewed in Saskachewan under licence by Great Western Brewing, not in Olympia Washington as most assume.

Best Feature: light mouthfeel
With a name like "Olympia" one would believe to be brewed down south in Washington State but no, it’s actually brewed in Saskatoon. When poured, the Olympia possessed a clear pale yellow colour with a decent head that lingered. The nose was a mild hoppy aroma with average carbonation. I found the mouthfeel to be very light and the flavour almost imperceptible. The finish was rather quick and the aftertaste disappeared quite quickly. This is the kind of beer that I would drink more the alcohol than for taste, a good post tournament beverage. |
