Best Feature: rich dark brown colour
Howe Sound Brewing’s Rail Ale is a delicious brown ale that unfortunately has limited distribution. I love the packaging used by this brewer: a 1L Grolsch style dark brown bottle, it grabs your attention right away. When poured, the head was loose with rather large bubbles and its overall colouring was a rich dark brown. The nose was a charming burnt malt aroma with undertones of sweetness. The mouthfeel was light to medium and the flavour was distinctly burnt malts but it was not over done. There was a hint of sweetness in the bitter finish which lasted on the back of my tongue. Overall a very good beer from a microbrew that is slowly distributing beer outside of Squamish. |

Best Features: great bottle and chocolate aroma
We were lucky to have friends who bring us beer to sample for the website. The Rail Ale from Howe Sound Brewery is a perfect example of a beer that I have tasted at events before, but never had the chance to review. This beer is available in exquisite 1L pop top (Grolsch style) bottle that sells for $8.50 directly from the brewpub. When we popped the bottle the aroma immediately released; a pleasant mixture of chocolate and roasted sweetness. The pour produced a light and wispy head that lingered. The malty sweetness and roasted flavours are immediately apparent, but the beer seems a little watery and light in body. Overall, very enjoyable and light on the tongue, with a nice lingering roasted flavour. Try this beer with a dessert made with molasses or bitter-sweet chocolate. A great centerpiece for any table, try giving one of these beers as a gift instead of a bottle of wine.
Beer Fact: Howe Sound Brewery has a good selection of beer with seasonal offerings. Brewpubs are the perfect location to try some beer and food pairings because they usually offer a wide variety of beer and food under one roof. |

Best Feature: sweetness of the malts and not too heavy
Rail Ale is a 5% nut brown ale that has a cloudy, attractive dark brown colour, and a slight chocolate aroma. I was pleasantly surprised at my first sip, I was expecting something with a heavier body. Rail Ale went down very easily and had hints of chocolate. Definitely a darker beer that you could enjoy more than a couple of pints over the course of an evening. Try this and other flavours fresh off the taps the next time you are passing through Squamish. You can purchase Howe Sound's flavours in impressive 1L bottles to go at the brewery or look for them at a select few private liquor stores (formerly cold beer & wines).
Beer Fact: This Nut Brown Rail Ale received its name in recognition of the Westcoast Railway Heritage Park in Squamish BC.
