Konings Hoeven Quadrupel Trappist Ale - Abbaye de Tilburg

Best Features: bitter and hoppy
Named after a monetary in Holland, Konings Hoeven (or 'Royal Farm') Quadrupel Trappist Ale is the strongest version of beer produced by Abbaye de Tilburg. Tilburg also produces Duppel, Tripel and Blond styles of beer. The bottle is small, slender and truly a work of art with meticulous designs engraved all over the bottle. When the bottle is opened it immediately releases a complex fruity aroma. The pour produces a rich brownish head that lingered for a long time. From start to finish this beer is complex, fruity, bitter, and strong. The bitterness lingers on the tongue for a long period of time. It is often a little difficult to rate rare beer like this; there are not many beers to compare it to and sometimes the flavour and complexity can be lost on some people and your appreciation will change depending on your mood, the atmosphere, or food pairing. Konings Hoeven Quadrupel is a strong beer with robust flavours, high alcohol content, but great for tasting among friends. Match this with complex dishes full of flavour (curry, Thai, tomato sauces).
Beer Fact: There are seven Trappist breweries in the world, all in Belgium. They are Westmalle, Westvleteren, Chimay, Rochefort, Orval, Achel and Tilburg. No other breweries are entitled by law to apply that name to their product. Trappist beers are top fermented, high in alcohol content and produced by monks.

Best Features: floral notes, unique
Konings Hoeven is a Belgian ale that comes in a long neck brown bottle and is imprinted with text on the bottle itself. In the glass, this ale had a great head full and thick with nice tight bubbles that lingered. The appearance of this beer was very inviting with a cloudy and dark honey brown colour. The nose was very fruity with hints of sweet floral notes. I found the mouthfeel to be very light with a uniquely sharp fruity flavour chased by a lingering bitter finish. While Belgian beers have not been my favourite style this beer was definitely something I could sip during an evening. |

Best Features: poured appearance, fruitiness
Konigs Hoeven Quadruple Trappist Ale is a strong Belgian ale that has a really inviting pour. Somewhere between cloudy & translucent, the colour is a strong amber with a nice beige head with average retention. The beer has a distinct fruity aroma, a bold fruity and higher alcohol flavour, but finishes with just the right amount of bitterness. Try drinking your Belgian trappist style ale from a goblet glass. It lets you stick your nose in and enjoy the aromas! A sipping beer to be enjoyed, why not think of pairing this with strong cheeses or strong smoked meats? Available at select government & private liquor stores throughout lower mainland, this beer costs $3.39 for a 330ml bottle, worth every penny!
Beer Fact: This beer is known around the world as "La Trappe" with the exception of North America. Someone below our borders apparently owns the rights to that name here & had to be changed.
