Best Features: smoky aroma, possible food pairings
Belhaven Wee Heavy Ale is imported by Premier Brands into British Columbia. Wee Heavy Ale is another example of the strong UK portfolio available in the government liquor stores. Available in a full pint bottle (500ml) Belhavan produces full-flavoured and complex beer. The aroma is full of malts and a hint of smoked wood. The pour produces a deep red beer with a nice thick lingering head. The first sip produces an initial sweet malt taste followed by a bitterness that lingers. The finish also seems a little 'dry'. Not for the weak of palette, Wee Heavy Ale is probably a little more than 'Wee Heavy' in flavour. Great for a pub night at home, this beer creates a strong UK feeling from the packaging, the pour and the taste. Pair this with something smoky or mesquite, like smoked sausages.
Beer Fact: Belhaven Brewery is the largest regional brewer in Scotland. From its historic brewery it produces a portfolio of branded beers which it sells to it own estate of public houses in Scotland and to a wide range of free trade customers, as well as to the take-home and export markets.

Best Feature: great for sipping
The Belhaven Wee Heavy Scottish Ale comes in a rather distinctive 1 pint long neck brown bottle. When I poured this ale into a glass, the colouring was a delicious clear reddish brown topped with a rather thick and tight head. The bouquet was an inviting sweet malt fragrance. The mouthfeel was distinctly medium with light carbonation with a smooth sweet start. I found the finish to be mildly bitter with a strong smoky aftertaste. I like this beer as a sipping beer and would probably order it with a nice piece of meat like a Peppercorn Steak. |

Wee Heavy is a 6.5% deep reddy-brown Scottish Ale with an ample brown head. I found the mouthfeel to be very thick & heavy, but smooth at the same time. There were slight caramel notes & an extreme smoky-wood, dry finish. So dry in fact, I almost felt thirsty afterwards! This is definitely a sipping beer, meant to be enjoyed on a rainy (or snowy) night in front of the fireplace. You can purchase Belhaven's Wee Heavy at BC government liquor stores at $3.60 per large 500ml bottle.
Beer Fact: A "true" pint of beer would be the size of the Wee Heavy 500ml bottle. Belhaven has been brewing in the town of Dunbar Scotland since 1719.
