Best Feature: great name, excellent beer!
Nelson Faceplant comes in a wintry bottle and blue and white case with a winter scene on it. Nelson Brewery offers a wide range of products that are available in most liquor stores (often hidden on the side shelves). Faceplant Winter Ale is a great value for a specialty product with a variety of ingredients. The aroma reminds me of sweet cocoa. The pour produces a rich thick head that is very fluffy like foam in a milkshake. Faceplant has a low amount of carbonation and is fairly light in body, especially for a dark beer. The initial taste is sweet followed by a soft lingering bitterness and roasted aftertaste. This is a great beer for tasting because the flavours will flow through different parts of your mouth and taste buds. Faceplant Winter Ale is perfect for sitting in front of the fireplace after a long day of skiing or playing in the snow. Try this beer on it's own or match it with some dark chocolate or a dessert made with molasses to really send your sweet taste buds to new levels of pleasure.
Beer Fact: Nelson Faceplant Winter Ale was originally only a seasonal beer but because of it is so popular it is also being offered during the summer. Same beer, different box! |

Best Feature: great price for a specialty beer!
Nelson's Faceplant Winter Ale is a 6% full bodied English ale. Its deep chestnut colour with beige head is very appealing, and the mouthfeel is definitely malty. I also tasted slight chocolate / caramel hints. Purchase Faceplant at the government liquor stores for $10.95 per 6 pack. This beer would pair excellent from a traditional turkey dinner, right through to a warm home-made apple pie. Grab it while you can, as the supply for Faceplant will be in limited amounts as we approach the summer months. Don't serve this ale too chilled, as you may mask many of the full flavours created.
Beer Fact: Nelson Brewing (and ice company) opened its doors in 1897 and lasted until the 1950's. Thanks to a handful of local business people, Nelson brewing re-opened in 1992 and still operates today in the same historic building.

Best Feature: thick rich head
Nelson Brewing Company's Faceplant Winter ale is only seasonally available, so it will not be in your local beer store all year. When poured, this ale was a dark reddish brown topped by a nice thick head with tight bubbles. The nose is distinctly malty with undertones of sweetness maybe even caramel. The mouthfeel was medium and full-bodied, with a sweet start chased by a malty finish. I rather enjoyed this beer; I found it easy to drink and enjoyed the flavours. I would probably have this with an nice rare cut of prime rib.
Beer Fact: Nelson Faceplant uses additional ingredients to add flavour (and alcohol levels) in the beer; brown sugar and molasses.
