Best Features: rich head, complex and smooth
Black Canyon Porter from Winthrop Brewery in Washington is a rich and smooth porter. This beer was available at the Fest of Ale in Penticton and this is the second time I had the opportunity to taste this beer. The aroma is a great mixture of caramel and chocolate with light hops. The pour produces a nice rich head that creates a lot of anticipation before the first sip. After the senses have been teased the initial taste is roasted and followed by a slightly bitter and smooth finish. The mouthfeel is very smooth and light. This beer is perfect for pairing with complex meals; curry, stew or even chili. By far one of my favourite beers of the festival and worth driving to Penticton (or Winthrop) to sample.
Beer Fact: Porters and stouts tend to go well with more complex meals. If you find it difficult to drink darker beers try drinking them with a meal to offset some of the complex and unique flavours. |

Best Feature: sweet aroma
Winthrop Brewing Company from Washington State produces some great products including the Black Canyon Porter. The beer has a sweet aroma, almost like dark chocolate. Black Canyon Porter starts of with a light roasted taste and a smooth finish. It is very light on the tongue and the low carbonation level makes it easy to swallow. Not available in government liquor stores, Black Canyon Porter is definitely worth a trip to Winthrop. I was surprised to find out that this beer was 5.6% alcohol. Try pairing this one with Thai food or help sooth the tongue from that wasabi burn.
Beer Fact: Winthrop Brewing Company is just one of many Washington State Breweries. The Northwest is one of the hottest markets for microbrew beer in the world.

Best Features: thick creamy head, easy to drink
Black Canyon Porter is an excellent beer from Washington State. The aroma is combines malts and roasted characteristics but is also sweet. In the glass the pour is very nice with a thick creamy head that lingered for a long period of time. The mouthfeel is surprising light with minimal carbonation. From start to finish there is no mistaking that Black Canyon is a Porter. This is definitely the type of dark beer that is easy to drink and inviting to look at. Very complex and full flavoured this is exactly the type of beer I love drinking with steak, turkey or curry. Great beers and a great group of brewers make this beer a success.
Beer Fact: Winthrop is located south of Oliver, B.C. and parallel to Mt. Vernon in Washington State. Winthrop is a small town that offers recreational opportunities for tourists year round. A cool small town with a great micro brewery!
