Best Features: the elephant logo, a gift
Klang Beer (or strong beer) from Cambrew was a gift from a former Beer Tasting & Education student who traveled in Asia last year. The beer comes in an old style red and white can with a large pull tab and huge opening at the top. The beer had a hoppy alcohol and metallic aroma (usually the indication of a beer going or gone a little off). The colour was clear and the head was light and wispy. Surprisingly this beer is 7% alcohol but it is not thick or 'chewy' like other higher alcohol beers or malt liquors. The mouthfeel is fairly light followed by a lingering bitterness. This beer would taste better in Cambodia, but still was not too bad for a high alcohol beer. This one would be good for camping and university students at the end of the school year when the pockets are empty.
Beer Fact: Many breweries use specially treated cans that prevent metallic flavour or aroma being absorbed by beer. The inside of the can is lined with a special material. |

Best Feature: high alcohol content
Klang Strong Beer from Cambodia will not win any awards for the packaging or the flavour but it is fairly easy to drink. Hints of hops and mild sweetness are mixed in with a metallic odor that is hard to mistake. In the glass the beer in pale and very clear. I was expecting a beer with a lot of carbonation and an alcohol burn but they were both absent. Klang is high in alcohol content but was light on the tongue. I would definitely try this beer if I was in Asia. The high alcohol content will deliver a punch in the hot sun but also sooth the tongue with hot spicy dishes. Klang is not available in British Columbia liquor stores but you might be able to find it in a specialty store or Cambodian restaurant.
Beer Fact: A lot of brewers will make higher alcohol beer or 'malt liquors' by adding additional sugars during the brewing or fermentation period.

Best Feature: the name is fun!
Klang is a product of Cambodia is more like a "malt liquor" style brew. In a glass, Klang lager is clear pale yellow colour topped with a good head of medium sized bubbles. I found the aroma to be hoppy with strong hints of metal, probably since we tried it from a 320 ml aluminum can. The mouthfeel is very light with almost non-existent carbonation. The finish was hoppy with a very soft bitter aftertaste. It could be that we received a batch that was off which would explain some of the anomalies we found when trying this beer. Overall it is fairly easy to drink for a stronger beer.
Beer Fact: The word "Klang" means "strong" hence the strong beer with 7% alcohol
