Best Features: malty sweetness, canned microbrew
RaceRocks Amber Ale from Lighthouse Brewing is available in select government and private liquor stores throughout the Lower Mainland. Microbrew beer is not usually available in cans, but Lighthouse is an exception. As soon as you crack the can a caramel, buttery and roasted flavour is released; these characteristic are more often associated with brown ales. The pour produced a thick rich and creamy head that lingered for a long period of time. The initial taste is a light malty sweetness followed by a mixture of caramel, malts and slight roasted bitterness. RaceRocks also achieves this while still remaining light on the tongue. This beer is perfect for BBQ sauces and roast pork or beef. This is definitely my type of beer; roasted, malty, sweet and bitter all in one can.
Beer Fact: Vancouver Island has a great tradition for Microbrew beer and has the most breweries per capita in Canada! This has created a great "beer culture" in Victoria where one of Canada's best beer festivals takes place every year (The Great Canadian Beer Festival). |

Best Feature: sweet roasted malt flavour
Lighthouse Brewing RaceRocks Amber Ale came to us in a rather unobtrusive 355 ml silver and blue tin can. When poured this amber ale was a delicious dark amber almost coppery colour topped with a thick cream coloured head. The nose was very malty with undertones of hops. This amber ale caught me off guard, I was expecting a medium to heavy mouthfeel which was not the case. It was light on the tongue with a sweet roasted malt flavour and hints of caramel and a mildly hoppy finish. I really enjoyed this ale and would recommend it with a nice prime rib or juicy cut of steak.
Beer Fact: Lighthouse Brewing started in 1998 and produced beer in kegs for the Greater Victoria market.

Best Feature: the thick and creamy head
Lighthouse RaceRocks is a 5.2% amber ale. It's amber-chestnut in colour with a light beige head having good retention. The aroma is very roasty. For a medium bodied beer, I found it to be creamy, malty and clean. There are roasted notes and it is very smooth through the finish. This is Lighthouse's flagship product. This brew is available at the government liquor stores in 355ml cans for $10.95 per 6 pack. Pair RaceRocks with a meaty topping pizza or a flavourful top sirloin. Lighthouse has hit it home with this one.
Beer Fact: Besides being available on tap, Lighthouse cans their beers for distribution. Beers that are canned provide a better seal and are less prone to going flat than bottle. More importantly they are protected from the light, beer's arch enemy. Bottles, especially clear in colour, are prone to becoming "light-struck", or having skunkyness as a result of exposure to light.
