Best Feature: coppery red colour
This week's beer, Arctic Red from Yukon Brewing was featured at the 2006 Canada Cup of Beerl at UBC. In the glass, Arctic Red had a beautiful almost coppery red colour with an inviting sweet malty aroma. The head was long lived and nice and compact. The mouthfeel fell in the light-medium range with average carbonation. You can definitely taste the sweetness of the malt chased by the light bitterness of the hops. The finish was smooth followed by a delicious gentle aftertaste. Arctic Red is one of the best amber ales we have tried. Great with a steak, barbequed chicken or burgers. |

Best Feature: malty flavour
Yukon Brewing Company is distributed in BC by Peacock and Martin (Vancouver) and is available at most BC Liquor Stores. Arctic Red is a bold beer with a very present malty and fruity aroma. When poured into a glass a rich full head forms. The colour, a deep dark red/brown, and the aroma are very inviting. A malty flavour is very present and this is what makes this style of beer unique. The malty flavour is a mix between roasted nuts and dark bitter chocolate (excellent!). The smooth and creamy mouthfeel makes this beer easy to drink. The finish is very quick and refreshing with a nice malty aftertaste. This beer is definitely not for traditional lager drinkers who are unwilling to try new styles of beer, but, it is a great product for ale drinkers and people wanting to expand their beer experiences. Try matching Arctic Red with something spicy (curry, garlic or ginger) or barbeque sauces. |

Best Feature: creamy head
Arctic Red is a full bodied, full flavoured reddy-brown amber ale with creamy brown dense foam. When poured into a glass, the full rich head last for a long time. Arctic Red has is a slight hint of fruitiness and the chocolate malts flavours are definitely present. This beer is definitely a super premium product but is in the middle price range ($10.95 for a 6 pack). As with most of these darker ales, pairing the Arctic Red with beef, lamb or game would be great. |
